Oral health is a crucial part of overall health and wellbeing. Poor oral hygiene can lead to pain, infection, malnutrition, communication difficulties, and serious complications such as aspiration pneumonia and cardiovascular disease. In the UK, around 1 in 4 adults have untreated tooth decay, and oral cancer cases have more than doubled in the last generation, with over 8,000 new diagnoses each year.

Healthcare professionals must be able to maintain good oral hygiene for service users, identify common conditions, and provide safe, effective support. This course meets Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommendations for health and social care providers and develops both knowledge and practical skills. Emphasis being placed on prevention, self-care, partnership working, and applying safeguarding, consent, documentation, and infection prevention principles to deliver safe, person-centred care.

Delegates will understand the mouth’s structure and function, recognise common conditions, and risk factors, and identify high-risk groups across the lifespan. The course covers recognising pain, infection, deterioration, and oral cancer, and knowing when to escalate concerns.
