The All-Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme, supported by NHS Wales, Welsh Government, and the HSE, establishes the national minimum standard for manual handling training in Wales.
This standardised approach supports the movement of staff across multiple organisations (following the scheme), with no variation in practical manual handling skills, ensuring a strong focus on safe, person centred and effective care.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for all healthcare and social care staff in Wales who are required to carry out manual handling as part of their role. It is particularly relevant for:
- NHS Wales employees and agency staff who need a recognised, transferable qualification under the All Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme
- Health and social care workers moving between organisations in Wales who require consistent, standardised training
- Employers and managers who want assurance that their teams are trained to the nationally agreed standard for safe and effective manual handling
This course ensures staff can work safely, confidently, and compliantly across multiple organisations while providing person-centred care.
By the end of this course, you will:
- Apply principles of safe handling, ergonomics, and correct posture.
- Understand relevant legislation, responsibilities, and organisational policies.
- Identify and prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
- Conduct risk assessments for people and inanimate loads.
- Safely lift, carry, push, pull, and transfer loads and individuals.
- Assist with mobility, bed transfers, and fallen-person recovery using appropriate aids.
- Operate hoists and slings safely and effectively.
- Communicate and work effectively in team handling situations.
- Recognise and address unsafe manual handling practices.

- Principles of safer handling & ergonomics

- Musculoskeletal disorders & injury prevention
- Anatomy of the spine
- Risk assessment methods
- Organisational policy and communication
Module B – Inanimate Load Handling & Ergonomics
- Safe lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing/pulling
- Posture and body mechanics
- Team handling and communication
- Practical demonstrations (e.g., lifting a box safely)
- Storage ergonomics and equipment checks
Module C – Sitting, Standing & Walking
- Assisting with transfers and mobility
- Person-centred risk assessment
- Recognising unsafe practices
- Promoting independence and safe posture
Module D – Bed Mobility
- Moving people in and around beds/trolleys
- Use of flat and tubular slide sheets
- Safe application of handling aids
- Identifying unsafe techniques
Module E – Fallen Person Handling
- Assisting individuals who have collapsed
- Safe use of recovery equipment (e.g., scoop stretchers, slings)
- Emergency manual handling principles
Module F – Use of Hoists
- Safe use of hoisting equipment
- Types, selection, and use of slings
- Team handling and communication during hoisting
- Legislative requirements (LOLER 1998)
Please note: Candidates are required to pass a Multiple-Choice question paper and will be observation of practical competences
