The Health and Care Act 2022 legally requires registered health and care providers in England ensure their staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the governments preferred training package. Oliver McGowan was a young man diagnosed with mild autism and learning disability who died due to swelling on the brain after being given antipsychotic medication, despite previous adverse reactions and his expressed wishes not to have the medication.
Olivers death highlighted serious gaps in healthcare professionals’ knowledge and understanding of autism and learning disabilities. Following this, his mother, Paula McGowan, campaigned nationally to make such training compulsory, promoting safer and more informed care.

For staff needing general awareness of how to support autistic people and individuals with a learning disability.
You will join other participants in a fully interactive virtual course, delivered in real time by an experienced trainer via webcam. The course includes interactive elements such as group discussions, and opportunities to ask questions, creating a classroom-style experience from home.
