This Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training – Train the Trainer – Co-Trainer (Autism) course prepares individuals with a learning disability to co-deliver The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism alongside an approved Lead Trainer.
The programme supports Co-Trainers (Experts by Experience) to confidently share their lived experience in order to improve understanding, challenge stigma, and positively influence practice across health and social care services. Delegates develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to deliver the training safely and effectively.
The course explores places a strong emphasis on communication skills, professional boundaries and wellbeing. Addressing the aims, structure and clear content delivery to ensure an effective preparation.
Accessibility, reasonable adjustments, and individual support needs are at the heart of the programme. These are embedded throughout to ensure Co-Trainers feel valued, supported, empowered, and fully prepared for their role.
Successful delegates are approved to co-deliver Tier 2 learning disability and autism training and receive an official Oliver McGowan certificate number.
People with Autism who wish to become Co-Trainers in the delivery of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism, contributing as Experts by Experience and using their lived experience to support and influence professional practice.

The Health and Care Act 2022 places a legal duty on all registered health and social care providers in England to ensure that their staff receive appropriate training in learning disabilities and autism.
The government’s preferred training programme to meet this requirement is The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. The training is named after Oliver McGowan, a young man with mild autism and a learning disability who tragically died after being given antipsychotic medication, despite known previous adverse reactions and his clearly expressed wishes not to receive the medication.
His death highlighted the urgent need for improved understanding of learning disability and autism across health and care services.

Day 2 – Tier 2 Autism
Day 3 – Preparing to Deliver
Three-day programme:
Each day is typically delivered as a 5-hour session (including breaks).
Participants may bring a supporter to assist them to complete the course if required.
Please Note: The course will be delivered over three non-consecutive days.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Health Education England Oliver McGowan trainer PIN.
