The Health and Care Act 2022 legally requires registered health and care providers in England ensure their staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred training package. It was named after Oliver McGowan, a young man with mild autism and a learning disability who died after being given antipsychotic medication despite known adverse reactions. His death exposed gaps in healthcare professionals’ understanding, leading his mother, Paula McGowan, to campaign for compulsory training to ensure safer, more informed care.

Before you start the Oliver McGowan Tier 2 training course, you must have completed the Oliver McGowan Tier 1 (part 1) E-learning course developed by Health Education England in partnership with E-learning for Healthcare.

You will attend a one-day classroom course led by an experienced trainer, alongside our trainers with lived experience, who provide valuable insights from their own personal healthcare journeys. The day includes interactive activities, such as group discussions and practical exercises, as well as opportunities for questions, ensuring you gain the skills and knowledge you need in an engaging, hands-on environment.
The training is fully aligned with all the Tier 1 capabilities of the Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting Autistic People and Individuals with a Learning Disability and maps to a predefined selection of the key learning outcomes from Tier 2 Capabilities.
